Chapter 22

“Wow. That’s incredible,” Kendall said. “I had no idea you guys were taking on those kinds of spinal cases now. Been out of neuro too long, I suppose. But SICU has been great so, no, I don’t think I’ll go back. We see a ton, the general surgeries, the complicated ones, and then the overflow from trauma. I’m glad I got the chance to transfer when I did. It’s opened up my eyes to a lot more which will be key for CRNA school – whenever I do decide to go.” She washed her last bite of steak down with the remainder of her beer.

“Want another one?” Anson nodded at her empty bottle.

“No, I’m good. Thanks.”

Dining together hadn’t felt forced for either of them. Small talk about food preferences and upcoming patient procedures naturally flowed, dominating the conversation. They’d even skimmed the surface of Kendall’s conflict in the unit, following their less-than-professional stairwell entanglement.

However, all discussion and decisions regarding the borders of their new relationship had remained far offshore, cast to the wayside by Kendall’s overriding fear of connecting on a more intimate level.

That was, until Anson stood up to clear the dishes, ignoring the precedent she’d set at the table.

“Kendall?” He paused over the sink, carefully planning his choice of words.

“Yeah?” She walked over to the barstools and stood opposite him, the kitchen counter maintaining a physical barrier.

“I know what I said to you last Friday, before everything happened. About not getting to know one another.” He studied her face, which remained receptive, not shutting him out as he approached the forbidden topic once again. “And what I’m going to say goes completely against that. I’d like to continue this, whatever it might be – fully understanding you’re not ready to make that dating ‘slash’ relationship leap. Just something casual. Would you be interested in that?”

She respected his candor. She feared what might evolve from their obvious chemistry if left unchecked, yet was unwilling to just walk away from him as originally planned.

“I don’t mean this to be crude, but do you mean like a fuck buddy?” she asked.

“No,” Anson choked out a laugh. “Not like that at all. And I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but I can get one of those anywhere. I’m not interested in that.” He leaned over onto the counter to close the distance between them, lowering his voice as if others might be listening in. “To say I’m attracted to you would be an understatement. To be blunt: I love having sex with you. It blows. My. Fucking. Mind. And yes, I want it as often as you’re willing to give it.”

An instant, blazing inferno of rushing blood burned into Kendall’s cheeks.

Wow. Hot, hot, hot.

She lowered her eyes, unable to handle his scorching gaze, but he immediately took hold of her hands, prompting her to look back up at him.

“I don’t want this if you’re uncomfortable with it,” Anson said. “You can give me clear boundaries, like remaining strictly professional at the hospital.
